West Coast Pinot noir

Tuesday, November 21, 2023

For our November event, Toronto Vintners Club Members and guests gathered for an extraordinary tasting of West Coast Pinot Noir from British Columbia, Oregon, and California.

The evening commenced with the delightful Nielsen Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County, a crisp and well-balanced white wine with enticing notes of fresh pineapple, green apple, and lemon zest, complemented by subtle hints of toasty oak and butter—a perfect start to an unforgettable night.

The highlight of the event was guest speaker Alex Abbot Boyd, a Certified Sommelier and founder of Insider Wines. He guided attendees through the nuances of Pinot Noir, unraveling the distinctive characteristics of British Columbia, Oregon, and California varieties. The educational journey set the stage for an evening of exploration and appreciation.

As the night unfolded, guests tasted nine different wines paired with delectable appetizers, each thoughtfully chosen to enhance the tasting experience. The mystery wine added an element of intrigue, allowing participants to engage in lively discussions and share their preferences.

At the end of the event, the wines were unveiled, allowing the members to compare their

rankings with those at their table and a guest speaker. The crowning jewel of the evening was the 2019 Goldeneye Gowan Creek Vineyard from California. With aromas of glacé cherry, blueberry pie, and fresh rosemary, this Pinot Noir captivated with voluptuous blueberry layers and a lush, mouthcoating palate. Sleek acidity and a resonant finish made it the group's favorite—a true treat for the senses. The table below shows how our guest speaker and the group scored the wines.

It was indeed a fun and enriching evening, celebrating the diversity of West Coast Pinot Noir
