For our March tasting, the Toronto Vintners Club embarked on a global exploration of Cabernet Franc, a grape long considered a supporting player but now increasingly recognized for its ability to stand confidently on its own. Members and guests gathered for an evening that showcased the diversity, versatility, and growing importance of this captivating varietal across some of the world’s most exciting wine regions.

After the reception, guests were seated to begin the tasting, accompanied by a selection of appetizers thoughtfully chosen to complement the wines. Guest speaker Anna Jarosv led the evening with an engaging and insightful presentation, guiding attendees through the origins of Cabernet Franc, its role in traditional blends, and its evolution into a leading varietal across both Old and New World regions.

The tasting featured a curated lineup of wines from across the globe, each highlighting a different expression of Cabernet Franc. From the Loire Valley’s classic, mineral-driven and red-fruited style to the richer, more structured examples from Tuscany and Mendoza, the wines demonstrated the grape’s remarkable adaptability. Guests experienced a range of aromas and flavours-from bright red cherry, raspberry, and violets to more complex notes of graphite, bell pepper, spice, dark chocolate, and earthy undertones. The contrast between cooler-climate elegance and warmer-climate richness created a dynamic and engaging tasting journey.

Appetizers paired throughout the evening enhanced the wines beautifully, allowing the herbal, savoury, and fruit-driven characteristics of Cabernet Franc to shine in different ways. The thoughtful combinations elevated both the wines and the overall tasting experience.

At the conclusion of the tasting, members and guests ranked their favourite wines of the evening. The group’s number one choice was the 2018 Le Macchiole Paleo (Tuscany, Italy), widely regarded as a benchmark for varietal Cabernet Franc. This standout wine impressed with its layered aromatics of ripe black and red berries, dark chocolate, and sweet spice, complemented by subtle herbal and peppery notes that reflect the varietal’s character. On the palate, it was full-bodied and polished, with silky tannins, concentrated fruit, and a long, refined finish. Its balance of richness and structure made it a clear crowd favourite and a perfect example of Cabernet Franc at its highest level.

The evening was a true celebration of Cabernet Franc’s growing prominence on the global stage. Through thoughtful discussion, diverse wines, and shared enthusiasm, members and guests gained a deeper appreciation for the grape’s complexity and charm. Another fantastic night that reminded us that sometimes the most underrated grapes can deliver the most memorable experiences!
