For our April tasting, the Toronto Vintners Club journeyed to the rolling hills between Florence and Siena for an evening devoted to one of Italy’s most iconic wine regions: Chianti Classico. Members and guests gathered to explore the beauty of Sangiovese through a lineup of Chianti Classico and Gran Selezione wines, showcasing the region’s balance of bright acidity, savoury depth, and timeless food-friendly charm.

The evening began with a refreshing welcome glass of Tenuta Corte Giacobbe Soave Ronca Monte Calvarina. This lively white wine opened with aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, and green apple, accented by subtle mineral notes. On the palate, it was crisp and energetic, with bright acidity and a clean, elegant finish; an ideal aperitif to awaken the senses before the main tasting.
After the reception, guests were seated to enjoy the formal tasting, accompanied by appetizers thoughtfully selected to complement the wines. Guest speaker Yuuji Nagaoka guided attendees through the history of Chianti Classico, the significance of the famed black rooster emblem, and the unique terroir of the region’s hillside vineyards. He also explored the character of Sangiovese, known for its vibrant cherry fruit, earthy complexity, and naturally refreshing acidity.

As the tasting progressed, members experienced a range of styles-from youthful, energetic Chianti Classico bottlings bursting with sour cherry and dried herbs, to more structured Riservas and Gran Selezione wines offering deeper layers of blackberry, leather, spice, tobacco, and mineral nuance. The diversity of soils, elevations, and winemaking philosophies gave each wine its own personality while maintaining the unmistakable signature of Tuscany.

At the conclusion of the evening, guests and members ranked their favourite wines. The group’s number one selection was the 2016 Brancaia Chianti Classico Riserva, a wine that impressed with both richness and balance. Its bouquet revealed ripe cherry, black plum, and wild berry fruit layered with spice, leather, and hints of tilled earth. On the palate, it was medium to full-bodied with a creamy texture, polished tannins, and a long, generous finish. The combination of expressive fruit, savoury complexity, and modern elegance made it a clear crowd favourite.
This tasting was a wonderful celebration of Chianti Classico and the enduring appeal of Sangiovese. With expert guidance, thoughtful food pairings, and spirited discussion among members and guests, the evening once again reminded us why Tuscany remains one of the world’s great wine destinations.
Another memorable night for the Toronto Vintners Club and many more discoveries to come!
