For our September tasting, the Toronto Vintners Club gathered to welcome fall with an exploration of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated vintages: 2015 Pinot Noir. Recognized as one of the top five vintages of the last 25 years, the wines of 2015 are renowned for their concentration, elegance, and remarkable aging potential. Members and guests were treated to a lineup that showcased Burgundy’s diversity, from Mercurey and Marsannay to the famed Premier Crus of Beaune, Volnay, Chambolle-Musigny, and beyond.
The evening began with a reception featuring the 2023 Domaine du Cerberon Bourgogne Aligoté Blanc. Fresh and lively, this white wine offered aromas of lemon zest, green apple, and white flowers, followed by a crisp palate of citrus and minerality. Its refreshing acidity made it a delightful aperitif and perfect preparation for the Pinot Noirs ahead.
After the reception, guests were seated to enjoy the wines, complemented by appetizers thoughtfully paired to match the tasting flight. Guest speaker Sabina Pornier, WSET, French Wine Scholar and Account Manager with The Vine agency, provided an engaging introduction to Burgundy, explaining the region’s terroir, history, and the challenges and rewards of cultivating Pinot Noir. Her insights gave depth to the tasting, highlighting the nuances of each wine.
Once all the wines had been enjoyed, members and guests ranked their personal preferences, and the 2015 Domaine Chandon de Brialles Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru emerged as the winner. Its expressive bouquet, depth of flavour, and harmonious balance made it a standout even among a lineup of exceptional 2015s. This wine captivated the room with an enchanting nose of ripe forest berries, dried plum, and cassis, accented by subtle notes of fresh-baked bread, licorice, and a hint of caraway seed. On the palate, it was full-bodied yet balanced, offering layers of black and red fruits interwoven with minerality and gentle spice. The acidity kept it vibrant, while fine-grained tannins gave it structure and elegance. Its lingering, mineral-spiced finish left a lasting impression, making it clear why this wine was voted the evening’s favourite.

This tasting was a true celebration of Burgundy’s noble grape, offering a journey through the elegance and diversity of the 2015 vintage. With expert commentary, thoughtful pairings, and lively discussion, it was an evening that reminded us why Burgundy remains the gold standard for Pinot Noir.
